This is a special edition featuring songs from L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2015, which was held at the University of Malta’s Sir Temi Zammit Hall on Saturday 21 March 2015. The event was presented with the support of the Malta Arts Fund through the Centre for Creativity and the Valletta 2018 Foundation. The songs I have picked are:
Ecca Muscat – Ġismi (lyrics: Mark Pellicano / music: Matthew Pellicano)
Raquel Galdes – Ċans Ieħor (lyrics: Daniel Paul Farrugia / music: Norbert Borg)
Neil l-Urugan – Introduzzjoni
It is always a great pleasure to discover a new Maltese hip-hop rapper. Taken from Neil l-Urugan’s debut release, this particular ditty has a very catchy and well crafted refrain, which really demonstrates his potential to become one of the true contenders on the local scene, and possibly beyond.
Airport Impressions – Starsigns
Airport Impressions’ Johann Schembri got married recently. Here’s wishing him and his wife all the very best.
Cinnamon War – So Cold
Cinnamon War have produced what is probably one of the most powerful and dynamic rock songs from Malta for some time. I really like this song…and I still haven’t met anyone who disagrees.
Andre Camilleri – I Long For Silence
This Canberra-based Maltese singer-songwriter is planning to release his next album, entitled The Road, the 17th of April. This is the first track released from that album and I expect that most of the songs on this new release will be similar to this, in the sense that Camilleri has now established a recognizable sound and style.
KNTRL – Night Shifts
I’m not sure how to pronounce the name of this a Maltese electronic act based in Berlin. The duo consists of multi-instrumentalists Clint Spiteri and Erick Saliba, who started working together in the winter of 2013. I like the sound they produce and I’m sure that many other fans of electronica will like it too.
