The writings and workshops of Augusto Boal have influenced many theatre makers and social change organizations around the world. Combining many of the aspects of improvisation with some of the techniques associated with J.L. Moreno's concept of Sociodrama, Boal's unique synthesis extends Brecht's Epic Theater concepts into a new realm of practicality.
Boal techniques for the Theatre for the Oppressed include: Forum Theatre, Invisible Theatre, Cop in the Head, Rainbow of Desire, and Legislative Theatre.

- Center for the Theatre of the Oppressed - Omaha - Doug Paterson sponsors conferences on the Pedagogy of the Oppressed in Omaha and conducts Boal workshops, both in the US and internationally. Augusto Boal, Paulo Freire, and Peter McLaren were the featured speakers at a conference on "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" held in Omaha, Nebraska from March 21-23, 1996. This was the first and only public appearance of Freire and Boal together at such an event. The conference featured over 350 workshops, performances, demonstrations, debates, and dialogues.

- CTO-RIO - The Center of the Theatre of the Oppressed in Rio, Brazil, is a non-profit, cultural association engaged in research in the area of training, theater production, and the diffusion of the Theater of the Oppressed in Brazil since 1986. Under the direction of Augusto Boal, it has contributed to the democratization of Brazilian society.
- Formaat: Forum Theater and Workshops - A very active Theatre of the Oppressed company based in the Netherlands. The website has pages in English and Dutch, and offers news and information about Theatre of the Oppressed activities by the worldwide TO community.
- Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed - A global forum based on the ideologies and actions of Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal. This organization developed from a series of four conferences held in Omaha, Nebraska from 1995-1998, organized by Doug Peterson.
- The International Theatre of the Oppressed Organisation - Designed by Augusto Boal as an Organisation dedicated to help all TO Centers to develop themselves, so that they can help other TO groups to grow and develop.
- TOPLAB: Theater of The Oppressed Laboratory - - Founded in New York City in 1990 by a group of educators, activists and artists whose work is based on extensive collaboration with Augusto Boal. TOPLAB conducts on-site training workshops on theatre as an organizing tool for activists in neighborhood, labor, peace, human rights, community-based organizations, using interactive theatre to analyze solutions to problems of oppression and power connected to AIDS, substance abuse, family violence, homelessness, unemployment, racism and sexism.
- Act for Action - Theater for All - Based in Portland, Oregon, Act for Action uses traditional and interactive theater as a tool to build community, educate and promote social change. Director Jeannie LaFrance has over 20 years experience integrating different theatrical disciplines including: traditional, improvisation, social activism, educational, Theater of the Oppressed and drama therapy. - Alice Cristina Mello Cavallo - Brazilian software engineer who has developed an application called Virtual Forum Theatre, combining computer technology with Boal theatre techiques. - Center for Theatre of the Oppressed and Applied Theatre Arts, Los Angeles - CTO/ATA/LA was founded in 2001 by Brent Blair. This center produces training workshops by volunteer jokers who have worked directly with Augusto Boal. Also involved with workshops and performances with community based theatre organizations to increase awareness about art and activism, liberation art and community engagement, work on issues as diverse as racism and juvenile justice, awareness of the threat of war and the plight of immigrant residents facing post-9/11 laws in the US. - Headlines Theatre - Headlines was founded by a group of artists in 1981 in Vancouver, BC Canada. In 1984, David Diamond became the company's Artistic Director. While traveling throughout Europe he met and worked with Augusto Boal. This contact was to mark the move away from making theatre for communities and towards making theatre with communities. - Mixed Company Theatre - Mixed Company began as a Toronto-based artist-run collective in the early 1980’s, and in 1991 started focusing on integrating arts into the community through the use of Forum Theatre or Boal's techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed. - Utopia Arts - Founded in 2000 to work across related fields of group facilitation, training and drama-based arts. Utopia’s first project was “Speak Up!” funded by Hounslow Community Initiatives Partnership (CIP), Hounslow Older People’s Festival, Age Concern England and Unity Theatre.
